Radical Christmas at Brook Hills

Posted on Nov 19th, 2009 at 8:38 PM

As a church we are making every effort to do as much as possible for as little as possible. A big challenge...particularly at Christmas. The decorations for Christmas this year, in our lobby and in the Worship room, will all be at no cost so that we can use our resources to help meet critical needs all over the world.

We're actually having fun working together to create and promote information on our campus without spending any money. Our faith family has really been incredibly supportive in this adventure!

This Christmas we have asked families to make stars out of cardboard and tin foil to decorate our lobby. We've asked them to write a country or a people group on the stars before they decorate them with the foil and commit to pray for that country or people group for the month of December.

This year, as people walk through our lobby, it may not look as polished or have all of the traditional elements you would usually see at Christmas but we hope that our faith family and others around the world will be impacted by them, hopefully in a way that will last long after the stars come down and the lights are stored away.

LOVE IT!!!

I love what God is doing in this faith family. The cardboard stars covered in aluminum foil remind me of the ones we used to make in school when I was little.

GREAT idea!

Each Christmas, as our family gathers at Nana's house, we bring one wrapped gift (under $20) for a white elephant exchange. As each gift is opened, the giver tells how the balance of money that would have been spent on family gifts has been used. We have helped single moms give Christmas to their kids. We have bought goats and chickens for families in Africa. We have supported mission work in our city and around the world. These stories of lives touched are the highlight of each Christmas!

That is a practical thing to do and shows where the right priorities should be - we can learn that for our own lives.
