Brook Hills, Compassion and the church in Majurnacha

Posted on Dec 14th, 2009 at 9:33 AM

One of the great benefits of working with Compassion International is that they are providing the link between our faith family and faith families in India. We have the unique privilege of serving our brothers and sisters in what is economically the neediest country in the world (41% of the world’s poor) and spiritually the country that has the most lost people in the world (hundreds of millions who are without Christ). Below you’ll find information about the church in Majurnacha and the Child Survival Program we are a part of there. As you read, pray for our brothers and sisters in Majurnacha and for the spread of the Gospel in their community…

Majurnacha Child Survival Program has been overseen by the Chandrakona
Road Nutan Aalo Church since April 2007. The environment in the area is humid
and the land is flat. The typical home is made up of dirt floors with clay or adobe
walls and tile roofs. The primary diet is maize, fish, rice and potatoes. Wells are the
source of water in this area. This community is mainly involved in farming, but
many are unemployed in the off-season. Sometimes people make a living selling
forest products.

It is a 3 hour walk (4.5 miles) to the nearest medical facility for those who are in
need of medical help. Many students drop out of school to help parents in the fields
so there is only a 6 percent graduation rate among teenagers. 60 percent of the
children in this area are not in school at all. In this community, many people
worship nature and other inanimate objects. There is a great need to bring the
Gospel and love of Christ to these people.

The mothers at Majurnacha Child Survival Program receive supplemental foods
such as peanuts, fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs and meat. They will also have the
chance to attend social activities to help build self-esteem and confidence.
This local church has a great heart for mothers as influencers in their families.
They are bringing together mothers from different backgrounds to learn to overcome
ill feelings toward others. Bible stories, verses, songs and plays are used to teach
them about the love of God. Many have made confessions for Christ and the church
is committed to educating the mothers as well as following up with them to ensure
that the mothers remain faithful to God.

Majurnacha Child Development Center in Majurnacha, East India works in
conjunction with the Mujurnacha Child Survival Program. This program helps 264
registered children and works with them to provide health screening, check-ups,
immunizations, hygiene supplies, health education, and food. The children are
shown the Gospel through daily devotions, prayer time and other spiritual activities.
Children are encouraged socially through programs such as celebrations, field trips, leadership training and volunteer work.  Family members are encouraged to attend parent meetings, alcohol awareness programs, health check-ups and literacy programs.

I have been to India twice for several months each time and have a passion for the people of this most populous democracy in the world. I am so excited to see your commitment through Compassion to so many in need in this country. At one point in my life, I knew God was calling me to abandon the American dream and be a missionary in India. I did not obey. And while I have seemingly lived a good life in the 15 years since that time - good job, good house, good family - I have always felt as if I was wandering in my own personal wilderness since failing to risk it all for Christ back when that decision was before me. Your focus on India is re-igniting my passion to pursue God's calling - no matter where that takes me and my family of five! Please pray for me and my family. We don't want to play it safe. We want to risk it all. But to actually take those steps of faith and do it is where life really gets radical. Scary? Yes. Safe? No. Secure? Absolutely - secure in the sovereign hands of our Savior to whom we owe everything...even our lives.
